With it being the quiet time of the NFL, I reviewed the depth charts of teams to see who has a surplus at one or two spots and who is still in need or might want to improve their depth. This match making session is based of course on no injuries unless noted throughout training camp since that is a few weeks away.
Dallas Cowboys trade RB-Darren McFadden to the Indianapolis Colts for a conditional 2017 draft pick
With the addition of Ezekiel Elliott, Alfred Morris, Darius Jackson and the eventual return of Lance Dunbar the Cowboys are one talented back extra in the backfield. Darren McFadden is ideal set to the number two back and spot starter and for a team with Frank Gore and not much else; McFadden will provide a great second back and nice insurance plan. The conditional pick likely only needs to be a day three selection that the Cowboys would have received once McFadden left via free agency and the Colts would now get if they decided to let him leave after the season.
NY Jets trade QB-Bryce Petty to the Seattle Seahawks for a conditional 2017 draft pick
With the assumption that Ryan Fitzpatrick is resigned the NY Jets have one too many QBs that can play in the NFL on their team and Seattle could use someone behind Russell Wilson. Petty’s game matches nicely with what Seattle asks their QBs to do and recoup a pick back for the Jets at this point is worth it as Petty likely is odd man out. Ideal this trade is made early in camp so the Seahawks can get Petty up to speed to be a backup as fast as possible for the team.
Tennessee Titans trade DL Karl Klug and a conditional 2017 pick to the Dallas Cowboys for OG Ron Leary and a conditional 2017 pick
This trade is a win-win for both teams as the Titans get in Leary a plug and play replacement for Byron Bell. The offense system Leary is coming from with Scott Linehan and Jason Garrett has roots to the scheme Mike Mularkey runs and should be a smooth adjustment for Leary and the Titans. The Cowboys are desperate for pass rushing help and adding Klug, a try hard tweener, who gives great effort and provides versatility for the Cowboys as they continue to work at developing a reliable pass rush. I included conditional picks as protection for both teams in case one of these guys suffered a season ending injury in camp.
Look for more trade ideas as more matches become available since we all know teams would love to move Colin Kaepernick, Nick Foles, Sam Bradford and others but an ideal destination spot has yet to be revealed.
